Update: UFC Light Heavyweight Title On The Line at UFC 75

3 July 2007 5 Comments

Yesterday when I originally discussed the possibility that no titles would be on the line in the UFC 75 main event between Quinton Jackson and Dan Henderson I stated that the news was far from confirmed and I couldn’t have been more right. Less than a day after the report it now appears that the UFC Light Heavyweight Title, but not the PRIDE Middleweight Title, will be on the line September 8th in London.

The news was reported on Sherdog’s Steven Quadros Show yesterday afternoon. Sources for the report are from Zuffa and Quadros is a very respected journalist so this is surely the most recent and most well documented update on the situation.

Now the biggest question most fans have is what scenarios could play out this fall when the two champions go toe-to-toe. As we understand it a Quinton Jackson win would allow Jackson to retain the UFC Light Heavyweight Title but he would not win the PRIDE Middleweight Title which would be retained by Dan Henderson win or lose. A win by Henderson would give the versatile veteran 3 simultaneous MMA championships, a first for the sport. A win by the current dual PRIDE champion would also open up the possibility for the UFC and PRIDE titles to be unified although if the UFC was planning on doing this both belts would be on the line from the get go.

This situation is not fully played out just yet as nothing in MMA, or any sport for that matter, is official until it’s announced and even then things may change. Stay tuned to MMAFrenzy.com in the coming weeks as more is learned about the event.

I think this is just further evidence that Pride is in fact dead. They don't care to keep respecting that title. If Henderson wins or loses I'm sure he will remain in the UFC. It is still a tremendous honor for him to have won the title before the Pride name went down though. I would have liked Rampage to have a chance to hold it though.
P.S. yes I realise he had chances to win the belt before wise guy. ; )

This fight t doesn't really make sense unless the UFC belt is up for grabs.

It is a UFC venue with UFC rules, it should be a UFC title fight.

As far as the fight goes, I think Henderson will pull it out.  Rampage looked great in his last fight, a 1 punch KO of Liddell.

Unlike Liddell, Dan Henderson knows how to HOLD HIS HANDS UP,  so Dan should make it passed the first round.

Plus I don't think Henderson will be partying and doing blow all week before the fight, thus looking like shit once the fight starts.

    Lets go Hollywood!
