The Ultimate Fighter 6: Joe Scarola Stands by His Decision to Leave The House

By: Kris Karkoski (admin) | Oct 10, 2007

On today’s TAAG Radio show, Joe Scarola told Frank Trigg that he has no regrets about leaving the Ultimate Fighter 6. He is, however, unhappy with the fact that he let down Dana White, but even more so, Matt Serra. Scarola claims that the producers and cameramen of the show skillfully portrayed him to be much worse than he really is. He was facing a lot of personal issues at the time, but the show chose to only reveal certain aspects such as him desperately missing his girlfriend. Even Mac Danzig (the guy who defeated Scarola in episode 1) called into the show and defended Scarola. Danzig verifies that the cameramen were all over Joe from the moment it was announced that he wanted to leave the show.

Last Thursday, Matt Sera posted on his TUF blog that Joe Scarola was evaluated by sports psychiatrist Dr. Sherry Wulcan prior to going on the show. In the professional opinion of Dr. Wulcan, she did not feel that Scarola was capable of living in the secluded house for six week. Contrastingly, on today’s TAAG Radio show, Scarola claims that he was never evaluated by any sports psychiatrist.

For inquiring minds, Scarola is currently working as an MMA instructor at another gym. He’s also still together with the same girlfriend. He and Serra have not spoken since he left the show.

Nice facelift on the site. Maybe he found another job in another gym, but for fighting proffesionally he really burned his bridges. I mean when the prez of the best MMA venue ask you to wait until the next day and you completly ignore him and walk out almost right behind him you need more than a sports psychiatrist.

I don’t know, Danzig seems to be a stand up guy, and was in the house (so he knows more of what went on) Dana knows what really went on, and if he sees fit, may give him another shot. I think the way it was shown, he came across as a big Puss, but the powers of editing are incredible, you would be surprised how it can bend the “truth”.

  3. ravine says:

its sucks that he threw away that friendship wit matt serra…i would stand behind that guy till the day i died but thats me i like matt serra…hopefully we’ll hear more about joe in the future

  4. gipper says:

serra is a fukin baby. he does nothing but wine in that annoying voice. he’s not a stand up guy. 1 luckey win and he thinks he the fukin man. f*** you matt serra.

  5. ravine says:

it was not a lucky win….watch it again and u’ll see that matt serra totally dominated that fight and kick GSP’s ass not by lucky punch either….and u’ll love him when he makes matt hughes tap out….dont diss a man u knew u couldnt beat urself f***in prick

  6. gipper says:

your rite RAVINE i am a fukin prick. serra has 4 subs in his mma career. his last was about 5 years ago. you think a guy with 9 mma wins will submit a guy who is a 9 time ww champ. you don’t have a fukin clue RAVINE.

  7. Red says:

Matt Serra is a legitimate fighter and Hughes better bring his A game, if he wants to regain his title. Matt Serra is no joke and he is our Welterweight Champion. This will be a good fight. As much as I love Serra, I don’t see him beating the powerhouse that is Matt Hughes. I hope Serra wins, but it seems unlikely.

  8. SCOTCHYDOW says:

I agree that Serra’s win over GSP was not just a matter luck. I think (as I said before) that he would have beaten anybody they put in front of him that night, that night being the key. I also find him to be a whinny little chickenhawk (little guy syndrome). I think he is a formitable opponent, but we are about to see “the old” Matt Hughes put a serious thrashing on Serra. I think now that fighters have seen Serra dominate GSP, they will fight him differently, and definately respect him more BUT…… He’s about to get his ASS KICKED.

  9. zero says:

people like him shouldnt go on the show to begin with. i would have gladly taken his spot/

  10. ravine says:

i dunno u guys….ur seriously doubting a good fighter…and with the string of upsets happening alot lately dont be surprised when matt serra wins….and i wont hesitate to tell u so when he does

  11. gipper says:

it serra can beat matt hughes…i’ll never bad mouth him again.

  12. I_H8_PhilBaroni says:

I think that with MMA on any given night, any fighter can beat any other fighter regardless of past records, past titles and or past results between the same fighters. Hughes has always been great, but has shown flaws recently that give other fighters the belief that they too can find that ‘chink in the armour’. Serra has an already great ground game and worked on his standup to the point where he was starting to look pretty good against GSP, (who I STILL think right now is the best overall well rounded fighter in that division). Im not a Hughes fan, Im in Serra’s corner, so I hope he wins. But like I said, who knows?

  13. gipper says:

i tell ya what RAVINE if serra beats matt hughes i’ll quit doubting him and i’ll quit badmouthing him. i just don’t think he is as good as guys like gsp(even though he kicked the **** out of him once), hughes, fitch, kos, karo, sanchez, even lw’s sherk and penn.
also think my man lytle would take him out if they fought again too.

  14. Joeyisapus$$y says:

Joey. Please just get your weak, pathetic, whiny ass out of the whole sport. If you can’t even take 6 weeks of ur life for a opertunity of a lifetime, train with some great fighters and give it your all, just because you miss your girlfriend, then you don’t want it nearly bad enough. That the producers and cameracrew was on you more then others is no excuse. What do you expect when you are walking around the house saying you want to get out of there. Anyways. There are alot of good fighters still in the show and ill be enjoying the rest out the season without anymore whining.

  15. rocky says:

Serra has skill or he would not be where he is, but that being said, he fought GSP during a time of absloute inner turmoil. His personal life was shredded and his fighting showed that. Any other day GSP would win. Serra will not beat Matt Hughes and serra will be shown for what he is. An above average fighter, but not anywhere near the top fighter. Matt will win in 2 rounds by submission.
