Man, I did HORRIBLE on my picks tonight. Lost a little $$$ too. I was shocked by Thiago Silva’s manhandling of Alexander. Karo Parisyan also surprised me with the way he handled Chonan. I think it would be very reasonable to give Karo a title shot at either 170 or 180. I am not so sure I completely agree with the desision in the Bisbing/Evans fight, but both looked decent. Ed Herman also was kind of surprising to me. He has definately worked on his syand up game. Spencer Fisher really bummed me out. He came to the ring on fire, and then he couldn’t “get off”. Edgar’s wrestling was outstanding though. As far as an exciting wrestler to watch, I can name 3 off the top of my head-Randy Couture, Tyson Griffin, and Dan Hendersen. The don’t stricktly wrestle, but have implamented their wrestling bases. They have also built around their wrestling with the dirty boxing and jitz to make total packages, which you need to have in this sport. Hopfully Edgar realizes this, and doesn’t let himself be taken into believing he can just survive with just his wrestling like Sean Sherk does.
I meant 170 or 185…..
i didnt watch this one but i knew rashed would win…..was it a boring fight?????
Silva-Henderson in March for MW championship. That’s exciting.
Alexander was a surprise, but he should learn from it. Lauzon is going to be hard to stop and I hope gets a shot at the title soon. Houston should spend time with BJ Penn.
lol yes he should…its working for lauzon
What now? Evans vs Jardine, right? I know they’re friends, but this is business. Does anyone else smell SHOGUN vs Bisping in ‘08? SHOGUN KO rnd 2. —Hey I remember Tito, yeah, that guy WAS awesome.
Same here ScothyDow. Every single one of my bets lost. Not a big deal since I didn’t bet a ton of cash since they were mostly (except for Houston) underdogs. I think MMA odds makers might be doing a better job with the lines now because the last few events I have bet on (IFL, Strikefore, and the UFC) nearly every one it’s been the favorites winning each fight. I think Alexander’s loss was the only upset I can recall based on the odds.
I think the main event was good enough (better and different than I expected) and I think Bisping had a more impressive showing than Evans. Rashad clearly won the fight but I think Bisping has improved significantly especially his takedown defense and ability to power out and get back to his feet. I think he could be a force at 185 and won’t be surprised to see him move down now.
Lauzon was the other fighter who really stood out and made an impression but I thought Chonan-Parisyan really fizzled though Chonan didn’t look all that bad in the loss compared to the debuts of a lot of PRIDE veterans.
Worst pay-per-view ever. Where’s the refund line?
Not a very good card, so I wasn’t that disappointed. I know I may get crap for this, but I think both Bisping and Evans were both very overrated, and I think it showed in the fight. Thiago Silva was not that big of a surprise once the fight went to the ground. I was very impressed by Frank Edgar. He dominated Spencer Fisher who is one of the better Lightweights. Parisyan - Chonan was very disappointing since both usually are in wars. Overall, not a good PPV. UFC should make up for it at Nemesis. Looks like one of their best cards ever.
Edgar vs Fisher I gave a 2 out of 5 stars. Edgar completely dominated and put on a true wrestling clinic. Fisher didn’t have an answer the entire fight. Once Fisher tired, Edgar kept slipping out of full guard and constantly attacked (I don’t know how Rogan could keep saying those punches weren’t doing much damage - quantity over quality did a nice number on Fisher’s face).
Herman vs Doerksen I gave a 3 out of 5. I’m not a fan of Ed at all but I was very impressed with his showing except for the mistake at the end of round 2 when he missed a punch and not only fell into a deep triangle, but an armbar as well. The punching in the 3rd round was very sloppy and Ed landed a decent left hook to end it.
Chonan vs Parisyan was the most disappointing fight of the night. I thought it would be much better and only gave it a 1 out of 5. Karo clearly won each round, mostly by clinching and attempting some Judo throws. He had some decent early flurries while in Ryo’s guard and then some decent punches at the end, but nothing to show he’s ready for a title shot. I’d like to see him fight Koscheck or Fitch to determine who’s going to be a true contender once the Serra/Hughes/GSP saga runs its course in 2008.
Alexander vs T. Silva I gave 3 out of 5. I was anxious to see what Houston would do on his back, and now I know. Nothing. Why he went for the clinch out the gate I’ll never understand. Thiago should be on everyone’s radar for 2008, he’s about to have a nice run. I thought the ref ended the fight prematurely until I saw the replay and agreed with the announce crew that he did in fact make the right call. Plus, if he hadn’t stepped in, it’s not like Houston was going to escape before becoming totally unconscious.
Bisping vs Evans I gave a 3 out of 5. Evans clearly won the 1st round in my opinion and I thought Michael did enough to win the 2nd. The 3rd was pretty close, but the “ring control” is what put Rashad over in my eyes with the take-downs. I was impressed with Bisping’s take down defense however. When he walked to the ring and Rogan or Goldy mentioned that he chose to stay in England to train, I made my final decision that Evans would win. He had arguably one of the world’s premier camps to train at and he figured he didn’t need them. Big mistake and it cost him the fight (I did predict on another link Evans by split decision :^) ).
Prelim fight between Lauzon and Reinhardt. I gave this a 3 out of 5 simply because I was thoroughly impressed with Joe’s performance. In under 2 minutes, he made this 18-0 jackass look like the TUF fighters that Hughes toys with in training this season. Joe didn’t break a sweat and I don’t think he even took a punch. He could be cleared to fight next week he came out so clean. I have him absolutely as a top 5 in the UFC’s 155 division. It just sucks for him that his coach will soon become co-champion and may delay him getting a title shot (I’d put Lauzon ahead of Stevenson at this point).
Sounds like they left the fight of the night off air!?!?!?! Lytle/Alves sounds like it was up in the air ’til the doc stopped the fight cause Lytle was cut. I am glad he put up a good fight (and got a 55k bonus for it) even if he lost. I hope he can rack up some wins, cause he is a tuff MO-FO.
It was more like “Sedation” than “Validation”.
Worst UFC in recent months. Both Evans and Bisping are going to have to drop to 185lb if they want a title shot.
hahahhahahahaha, that’s a really good one! Either of those two, against Anderson Silva? hahaha, oh man… I don’t think Anderson Silva will be going anywhere anytime soon, no matter who they put in front of him.
I agree,Silva would ass woop either, but I did say title SHOT.
Both have under impressed at light heavy and any of the other title contenders would seriously beat down on Evans or Bisping. There are probably less contenders at 185.
The card was better than I thought. I was hoping Alexander would have won, but I think if he spends a little less time on his body and a little more time on his ground game; he will come back better than ever.
Houston will continue to do well against those who stand with him and will always be a question going against good ground game guys, much like Kongo.
Houston Alexander didn’t even fight. He looked like he was *too* worried about getting taken down, to the point where he didn’t even throw his hands. It was strange, compared to the flurries he came out with in his two previous fights.
