One week after defeating Rameau Sokoudjou at UFC 79 “Nemesis” undefeated mixed martial artist Lyoto Machida (12-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) has been offered a fight with former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Tito Ortiz. Machida has already accepted the fight and is awaiting acceptance from Ortiz.

No date has been set for the potential showdown.

Inside the octagon Machida has defeated Sam Hoger, David Heath, Kazuhiro Nakamura, and Sokoudjou while outside of the UFC he’s earned wins over Stephan Bonnar, BJ Penn, and Rich Franklin.

  1. Harim says:

Yes! Tito’s probably dumb enough to think he can stand and trade, at which point Lyoto would take him apart. That’ll be a fun fight to watch if they can make it happen.

  2. Josh says:

Tito sorry dude I like ya, but this guy is for real. Listen up if I had to put my money on a sure thing I would bet Lyoto Machida, this guy is way under rated, good on the ground, good standing up. Tito will probably make all three rounds of the fight because he’s a tough guy, but Lyoto in my opinion will score more often and give a all around better mixed martial arts show. Very good possibility Tito gets submitted in this one maybe sometime in the third round when he’s gased.

  3. Sean says:

Nice to see someone who also thinks Machida is way underated… I think he’ll get tito in a unanimous decision.. unfortunately i bet after he beats tito there will still be some bogus reason why he isn’t a top contender

  4. johnboy says:

i rate machida alot but i rate tito alot higher hes to big for machida an in my eyes tito is still a top 5 lhw in the ufc, so after tito out powers him wiv a ground an pound win in the second maybe machida will move down to middle weight, and people dont try tell me he wont fight anderson silva because there from same camp there are no friends in the octagon!

  5. Jason says:

After watching Machida take apart Soko, I think he would easily defeat Tito if Tito comes into to the fight the same way he came into the fight against Rashad Evans. I see Tito being a fighter who doesn’t have the heart and the passion to do this anymore. Machida, just like Anderson Silva, is on a mission to conquer his division and with that type of determination, I believe he will destroy Tito. Tito, although has improved, can not stand and punch with this guy. Tito does have a size advantage but Machida would train like hell to make sure he doesn’t get taking down. Tito doesn’t make up well with very good strikers and Machida, to me, is one of the best. I even think he is a better striker than Liddell, just not as powerful.

  6. belly says:

machida will show everyone hes good enough to be top contender. tough fight for tito and if he is to win he will have to improve on his last few fights.good match up tho and while i pick machida tito is a big lhw so will be interesting to see how they match up.

  7. Joe Mac BJJ says:

Jason, you’re absolutely right. I think Tito is the most overrated fighter of all time. he hasn’t stopped anyone named Shamrock since 2001. He just doesn’t have it anymore. Machida unanimous decision.

  8. eltz says:

i think tito will win this fight machida is good but i think his undefeated reign ends hear

  9. Sean says:

I think one major factor is being overlooked.. I don’t think tito will take the fight.. to much to lose for him.

  10. SpWedle says:

Well this seems like a do or die situation for Tito. The old Tito would have to comeback, but I also think Machida better take the fight serously. I beleive we’ve all seen what happens when a fighter doesn’t take his opponent serously.

  11. scotchydow says:

I just don’t see Tito taking this fight. It’s hard to say how well he would perform because his next fight may be the first time he has fought without injurys since he fought Vitor last time. I think Machida can take the Tito we have seen in his last 4 fights. A Tito at 100 % is a better match up though. I hate the fact that they are not putting Machida against Liddell. That is Dana protecting Chuck from a loss for sure.

  12. tubekid says:

Totally agree scotchydow…I do agree with the UFC that Machida needs to face a well known UFC Vet…we all know that should be Lidell. They fought on the same night so recovery time will be the same. Tito won’t take the fight. If he does i hope he is healthy and wins then finally shuts Rashad’s mouth and sends him down to middleweight..

Whatever happens we still get a crazy fight!!!

UFC give us 3-4 events a month…some free cable Spike shows and a Pay Per view or 2…That’s how you take over the masses!! Use the WWF/WWE (i know its not the same thing) model… Damn id love it.. Sorry this **** gets me pumped haha..can’t wait for Fight Night.

  13. Levente says:

This fight would be a really good one. But personally I would better see Tito against Thiago Silva and Jardine against Machida.
Staying with the Tito against Machida match-up, I think Tito has a really good chance to take him down and tko Machida with some good old fashioned ground-and-pound. On the other hand Machida’s stand-up game is lightyears ahead of Tito’s and I think he’s a better grappler as well. So if he can take Ortiz to a bad spot, than he’s in trouble. So money is on Machida.

  14. Mojo says:

You guys are right. Tito will not take this fight. He does not have the balls anymore to fight quaility fighers anymore.

  15. huertarogerhuerta says:

everyone keeps talking **** about tito and tito keeps shutting you up when are people gonna start recognizing that tito can still hang and beat the best just get that skank out of his life to stop screwin his head up and youll see tito rise to the upper tier of the division again

  16. fixxxer says:

Tito has never shut me up. What has he done latley? What was his last win? Shamrock I think….thats not very impressive. He had a draw with Rashad. He will never rise to the top because he never wants to fight. He cant even beat Chuck. He says he doesnt want to be a stepping stone to all the young talent…….so then beat them?? If he doesnt think they should be in the cage with him, that they are not as good as him….then teach them a lesson. I have yet to see it. Tito is very much overrated and will never be at the top again. He just stays in the limelight for his mouth….and he cant back it up. Seriously….he couldnt beat Rashad Evans, Machida would put a beating on him.

If they want Tito to be semi successfull….they need to feed him easy opponents to get his confindence back. The next step for Tito is to make sure he doesnt lose to them. I thought they threw him a bone with Evans….and even though if he didnt grab the fence he woulda won…..it was a pretty lackluster performance. Everyone has them….but from the calibur of fighter that Tito walks around and talks like he his…he shoulda ran him over. I want to see Tito vs Jardine…..JArdine would whoop him.

  17. Mojo says:

    FixXeR, well done.

  18. Sean says:

I agree with fixxer for the most part… except if tito didn’t repeatedly grab the cage then rashad would have had atleast 4 or 5 more takedowns during the first 2 rounds… so honestly grabbing the cage for tito didn’t cost him a win it saved him from a loss….

  19. DrBdan says:

I agree with Fixxer and Sean. Tito hasn’t done much in quite some time and if he hadn’t grabbed the fence against Rashad Evans he probably would’ve been taken down a handful of times and actually would have lost the fight.

As for Machida/Ortiz, Machida would take Ortiz apart standing and if it went to the ground Machida’s ground game seems decent enough to neutralize Ortiz.

Ortiz needs to hang his gloves up already and call it a career. As far as I’m concerned he is the same as Matt Hughes but in the LHW division. He’s a solid wrestler that dominated in the early years of UFC’s rebirth but now he’s fallen behind the curve and is too old to catch up.

  20. johnboy says:

seems alot of people dont like tito, i just hope he does take this fight an beat this machida whos win against soko was the most boreing fight ive seen in a while, i dont no why everyone is coming to the conclusion that machida is this great figher who would take chuck apart, stop makeing me laugh guys, it wasn`t long ago that u was all saying chuck is still the top dog then he had the losses against rampage n jardine and all of a sudden hes a washed up fighter, but then he beats the golden boy wandi who a lot of u thought chuck would get owned but to be fair it was the other way round, now let me get to my point if wandi would of beat chuck everyone would of said he gets a title shot so why dosen`t chuck get a title shot now he held it for so long so he should be the next in line after forrest, but everyone wants him to fight machida now and all i can think is WHY WHY WHY? machida has got a long way to come before he even gets to be associated with chuck so people stop jumping on the machida band wagon, put him in with someone like shogun who everyone respects because if he does fight tito an beats him from what you`ve all been saying bout tito he doesn`t even move closer to a title shot because tito is a washed up old fighter!

  21. Sean says:

it seems everytime Machida fights someone is always saying his opponent looks like crap.. Maybe it’s just me but if EVERY opponent looks like crap maybe its because he’s making them look like crap.. ha ha

As for title shots I don’t like the way it goes in the UFC.. You can get your but handed to you a couple times then beat one decent guy and all of a sudden you’re a top contender. Personally i don’t feel chuck or Wandi deserved a shot no matter who would have won.. I mean they both had back to back losses before they fought each other.

  22. danny boy says:

Let’s not forget that Tito Ortiz is now participting on NBC’s ‘The Apprentice.’ This could interfere with him accepting this fight. However, if he does accept it…I think he will win the fight. He HAS been training since he’s left and HAS gotten better. I’m pretty sure he can go 3 rounds at full speed now, as well. Don’t count Tito out…and who knows…he may be Donald Trump’s next Apprentice! Watch Thursday nights to find out! :)

  23. huertarogerhuerta says:

Watch the chuck vs tito 2 again tito was landing shots on chuck if instead of throwing 1 punch if he wouldve thrown combos like couture did to set up the takedown i think tito wins also if mario yamaf***up didnt call the early stoppage and it goes to championship rounds i think tito wins they fight again for some reason im goin tito all the way now this complete garbage about rashad being a bone thrown to tito is just crazy rashad has the best takedowns at 205 there is not a betta wrestler in that division so where ever your gettin this information that rashad is a gift fight at 205 u might wanna check it again cuz rashads gonna b a beast in the coming years

  24. Robbie says:

Being a Liddell fan, this next statement was hard to say, but here we go. I think Tito has a decent shot at winning this fight, if he is in shape, plays to his strengths, and doesn’t try to stand with one of the most accurate strikers in the UFC.
Don’t get me wrong, I would still slightly favor Machida, but I still think there are some unknowns as far as Machida goes. Machida is undefeated and has wins vs. some big name fighters, although none have been experienced light h.w. contenders or former champs. BJ, and Rich are elite fighters, but they are not light heavy weight beasts by any means. Although Sokku is a beast, he doesn’t have a lot of experience yet, with six fights and one big win.
How does Machida react if he is put on his back, and pounded on for a round by someone with a style like Ortiz? I’m not just talking pure strength either, because Sokku is as strong or stronger than Tito. I just wonder if Machida has faced anyone who specializes in beating good BJJ fighters down THROUGH THIER FULL GUARD? What is Machida’s cardio like? Can he take a beating and come back and have enough left to stop someone late? What kind of chin does he have?
Like I said before, I am not a Tito fan, and would love to see Machida drop him, but these questions popped up when I sat back and thought about it. One thing is for sure. Now that he is at this level of opponents, I think some of these questions will be answered in his next few fights.

  25. johnboy says:

    well said huertarogerhuerta

  26. Tito Ortiz is to much of a **** to accept that challenge, it would be good for him though if he beat Machida it would put him back in a number 1 position. Deep down inside he knows he cant hang so he will say not til im at a 100%, frigen punk hes not even as good as he used to be. Machida is a threat I told everyone since a Grip ago, training with Anderson Silva they got almost the same style who knows what goes down at their camp but everyone should take Heed those Brazilians are no joke for real. I would love to see that fight.

  27. Thumper says:

Before the Lidell v Silva fight alot of people talked about what would have happened if those two had fought a few years earlier when they were ‘in their prime’, alot of people also talked about how good Silva was in his prime. Seems to me that Tito has a win over Wanderlei ‘in his prime, something like 2001 in the UFC before Wanderlei went to pride.

Just putting it out there; a healthy and focused Ortiz is dangerous to anybody at 205. Focused on fighting instead of being a celebrity.

  28. fixxxer says:

huertarogerhuerta- Rashad is a good wrestler but Tito is supposed to have great takedown defense. If grabbing the fence is what it is…then that blows. The way that Tito runs his mouth about how much of a badass he is and seeing how Rashad had yet to fight a big name fighter….that was supposed to be an easy fight for Tito. He blew it. I never said he was washed up, he just is not that great of a fighter. He can not hang in there with the best of them He cannot win in key situations anymore. He should have beaten Rashad by this GnP that he supposedly has. He cant stand up with anyone. He gets punched and he has flashbacks of the Liddell fights. Its kinda like Rocky Balboa 5 flashbacks haha. Tito is a drama queen……I can see at the end of one of his fights him yellin “JENNA”!!! And she is running toward the cage yelling “TITO”!!! (another rocky comparison) Now if Tito actually had the heart the Balboa had.

  29. James says:

If Tito is healthy and focussed, he will destroy Machida. He will press him up against the fence, scoop him up, dump him and ground and pound him to hell. Machida does not like to get hit, and once he eats a forearm, hmmmm, he’s giving up. Everyone needs to get off of Machida’s nuts, and Andersons also for that matter. Anderson was just about taken out by a weak, slow, tired, and broken Travis Lutter.
One thing is for sure, Tito from Tito-Chuck 2 needs to show up, and not Tito-Rashad. But then again, Tito was definitely not himself against Rashad, he couldn’t even bend down. But anyway, Tito would destroy Machida and that’s it.

  30. huertarogerhuerta says:

lets be fair fixxer rashad isnt a good wrestler hes the best at 205 and idk if uve ever rolled with a really good wrestler but trust me a fence is just about ur only option when they get a hold of u and who r the only 2 people to takedown tito? Randy Couture and rashad id say thats some pretty good wreslters to get taken down by and just because rashad hasnt had a big name fight y does that make it supposidly an easy fight for tito? and im pretty sure the whole “JENNA” “TITO” thing happened when he was fightin shamrock sad but true.
James i completly agree if he comes healthy and wit out outside distractions i.e. the apprentice and making porn wit jenna(check imdb.com his next movie is called zombie strippers) then he could make a run to the top again and his first step is to take machidas 0
