Rashad Evans To Face Liddell in London Main Event [UFC 85]
Rashad Evans will replace the injured Mauricio “Shogun” Rua to face Chuck Liddell at UFC 85, according to a report from MMAWeekly:
“‘Ultimate Fighter’ season 2 winner, Rashad Evans, has signed on to face Chuck “The Iceman†Liddell as the main event of the upcoming Ultimate Fighting Championship show in London on June 7th as confirmed to MMAWeekly.com this evening.
Evans has long been rumored to face Brazilian light heavyweight Thiago Silva as a part of the May 24 card featuring B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk as the main event. Now Evans will step in to face Liddell.”
“Sugar” Rashad Evans (11-0-1 MMA, 6-0-1 UFC) remains undefeated, yet untested according to many in the MMA universe, so this fight should definitely help determine if Evans indeed has a place near the top of the UFC’s light-heavyweight division.
Evans will be giving up significant height, reach and experience to Liddell, who will likely be a heavy favorite going into the fight, especially after his recent win over Wanderlei Silva at UFC 79. Rashad Evans last appeared inside the octagon at UFC 78, where he walked away with a very close split decision win over Michael Bisping.
That is a gay main event. I don’t think Rashad Evans deserves that fight.
Good…I’m glad to see this fight…but now what will happen to Thiago? Who and when will he fight?
Man, I love Chuck, but I think I will be rooting for Rashad here. Only because I don’t want to see Chuck het his brains beat in again against Rampage, plus Rashad has a great career ahead of him if he learns to press the action. I too am wondering about Thiago now, i’ve been looking forward to seeing him again.
this is an interesting fight. chuck has a big edge in stand up and a great sprawl so its a massive test for rashad.this is what he needs tho to find out where he is in the division. but if chuck beats him expect a title shot v soon against winner of forrest and rampage.
The UFC came up with a pretty good match up hear. Not as high profile as Liddel-vs-Shogun, but still a very good match up. I think I am going to be rooting for Rashad in this one. This is going to be a tuff fight for him, but he has the ground and pound style that is needed to beat Liddel. he first has to figure out a way to take Chuck down which everyone knows is super hard to do. If does get Chuck down, he has to then figure out a way to keep him down and do damage on Chuck which is even harder to do! VERY interesting match up here!! Can’t wait to see it! As far as Thiago goes, he really needs to be tested as well, but all the big names are currently scheduled for other matches. Maybe by then, Stephen Bonnar maybe healed up from his injury that kept him out of the Hammil fight. If so, they could do a Thiago Silva-vs-Stephen Bonnar match up. That would be an interesting one though! Either that, or they could bring in Richardo Arona to face Thiago, which would be stellar!
I wouldn’t expect Chuck to get a title shot unless Griffen beats Rampage and of course he beats Evans. If he beat Evans and Rampage beats Griffen, then UFC would more than likely put on a rematch between Liddel and Jardine, providing that Jardine beats Wanderlei. If Wand beats Jardine, then they will probably try to redo the match with Shogun when he all healed up or a rematch with Wand.
I’d normally say Chuck has this hands down, but since Evans is Jardine’s best friend/shadow/training partner, he’ll probably pick up alot of pointers on how to win this.

I like JAI’s idea of the Bonner vs. Thiago fight when Bonner is healed. Let’s hope that happens.
I would like to see Thiago Silva fight the winner of that Hammil-Boetsch fight. Mark my words right now, if Tim Boetsch can dismantle Hammil like he did to Heath at UFC 81 he will be the newest Light Heavyweight fighting on the PPV main cards. Plus this Boetsch guy takes fights on the shortest notices. Fought at UFC 81 on 10 days notice, and fought in the IFL against Vlad Matuyshanko on 4 days notice 2 days after his last fight. This guy is a true warrior he will be a fan favorite very soon

1st off - Chucks wrestling is NOT better than Rashads!!! His stand up and take down defense is better than Rashad’s, but Rashad is a better wrestler! I dont think Rashad has the chin to survive vs Chuck - I see this ending in the 1st or 2nd - but then again, I also said Jardine would get stomped by chuck too…..so who knows!!
As for Thiago vs Bonner….BORING…im sorry, Bonner is a boring fighter to me…I really dont care if I see the guy fight again - I would like to see Thiago fight Sokoudjou at ufc 84 - I mean, they already took Rashad off of his fight - so why not take Sokoudjou off of his and put him up against Thiago? Or maybe have Rich Franklin move back up to 205? Why not? Its not like he will ever beat Anderson Silva!
I’m glad to see this fight. If Rashad beats Chuck it would cement his place in the UFC. Honestly I think Rashad got this one in the bag.
I agree that this fight isn’t as high profile as Shogun/Liddell… but very interesting just the same. North American fans that hadn’t discovered MMA prior to the UFC, may have a big misconception about Shogun’s abilitys after the Griffin fight … but they are aware of Evans’. Should have a good turn out.
this fight isn’t really that big to me i would rather of seen chuck and thiago, chuck will walk through rashard, look how easy bisping was getting up wen rashard took him down, first of all hes got to get chuck down chances are slim to none 2nd of all if he does get him down to keep him down very hard to do, only way rashard is going to win is a knock out but first he has to escape chucks right hand also very hard to do, i see chuck winning in the first 3 min, bit of a no match in my opinon

I’m kinda torn on this fight.. I’d like to see rashad win but in the same aspect maybe if he loses it’ll be the factor he needs to move down to 185.. he is in great shape but he looks small for 205.. I think he’d be better suited for the MW division..
I also agree with you Jason N. Chuck by no means is a better wrestler.. however his takedown defense is second to none..
Rashad definately has knockout power if you look back at his wins against Jason Lambert and Sean Salmon. But I honestly dont see him being able to do the same to a fighter like chuck. The iceman to win in the 2nd via knockout

I doubt Franklin would move up for a Thiago fight. I would imagine it would have to be a much bigger fight than that for him to move up or at least if it would have been the “headliner/ mainevent” of the card…or unless of course he started having trouble making 185lbs which I don’t think he is. Even if he never faces Silva again, there are still some great matchups for him at 185lbs, like Henderson…Bisping…Marquardt…Cote…Leben…Lister….Kamppman….Almeida…and Terrell just to name a few! Plus with the “potential” addition of Dennis Kang to the UFC (I heard UFC was in talks with Kang), this is more than enough to keep him busy at 185lbs.

Rashad is one of those guys that takes it to another level when he’s counted out by everyone. Look at what he did on TUF 2. he was the underdog in each of his fights of that season and ended up winning the whole thing! don’t count Rashad out in this one. If chuck over looks Rashad, he will loose just like he did to Jardine! Chuck better be on his “pees & ques” for this one. I can see this fight being similiar to the Gonzaga/Cro Cop fight. Don’t be surprised!!!!

This is great. I like Rashad…but he is not gonna beat Chuck. Rashad struggled with Bisping and Ortiz…..Chuck destroyed Ortiz twice and I dont want to even imagine what he would do to Bisping. Chuck is too strong for Rashad and the only way Rashad wins this fight is by Ground n Pound. Chuck doesnt usually go to the ground and Rashad has shown no GNP ability thus far. Rashad is in for his first loss in the UFC. Then I want to see Chuck vs Rampage III. First Rampage has to get past Griffin…but I got Rampage….not by much though.
I also feel sorry for Jardine….the guy has beaten Chuck and Griffin…needless to say he has lost to Alexander….but he still should be up there. I see Wanderlei knocking him out though.
Rashad has his hands full and I think Chucks Stand up is very dangerous for Rashad. Rashad will not be able to keep chuck on the mat, he might take him down but chuck has already proven that he will not fight on his back. I will be routing for Rashad because he is my home town fighter (505). Also I am looking for Jarden to go to war with Wanderlei. I will take Jarden for sure in this fight as he is very hungry for a title shoot that he feel he has deserved since he beat both Chuck and Forrest. He is next in line for a title shot if he beats Wanderlei.

i definitely didn’t see this coming! i’m suprised to see that rashad got a shot against a fighter like chuck after that sorry performance against bisping. he did win against him, but they both fought like crap. if he comes out against chuck like he did against tito (too afraid to get involved until the 3rd round), he won’t get through the first 2 minutes much less the 1st round. i do think he’s a better fighter than he has shown to be of late, but he seems to be afraid to really get out there and fight hard. i think he’s just protecting that record of his.

Jardine’s Chin is not that great YZFOXRACING you saw what Alexander did to him. Chuck in a counter puncher that is why Jardine looked good, Wandi is going to attack like Alexander did and it should be over fairly quick.

Wow Now let me just say i am a Huge Chuck liddell fan and a Huge rashad Evens fan. But I have to go with chuck liddell. Now this guys are both really good strikers and this fight is going to be huge. This fight is going to be a all stand up fight. Althogh chuck might want to think about taking rashad down. This fight scares me i really want chuck to win but damn who knows this is by far going to be the best fight in UFC history. Actually Rashad has knocked out two of his last 4 opponents.. If you dont remember that head kick he had on Sean Salmon then you missed out!!! IT was awesome.. Rashad’s last two fights were pretty boring, but if you want to get “technical” his fight with bisping was very “technical”… I still dont think Chuck will ever beat Rampage, he is just to much for him… Dana wants to give him fights that he can win from here on out, and it starts with Rashad. Lyoto and Thiago would both beat on Chuck.. I would not mind seeing Chuck vs. Houston that would be a fun match to watch.

BAD, he got beat by Keith Jardine… he is fighting somebody like Rashad so he can get another win under his belt before he fights somebody worth something so he can go into retirement!!! Wandy is far from wasged up, the guy is 32 years old. He had a rough first outting back in the UFC, but he will be back. Personally, I don’t know why he didn’t press Chuck, maybe he was too exited pre fight, but we will see a better Wandy 2nd time around.
Yea I think he is just not big enough for the guys in the light heavyweight division… All the guys for the most part have some good reaches.. Chuck(38) is getting to old, and is soon to retire, in my opinion. Atleast if he has any dignity left.

That could be good, however. Two losses in a row. I know Dan never got ko’d but he came very close against Anderson. I am not saying Thiago has the skill set of Anderson Silva. All I am syaing is that Thiago is quicker and remember the Chute box guys are very well rounded. Conclusion would be that it could very well be three losses in a row for Hendo. Again Wilson Gouvea would be a great opponent. Sorry Hendo, I love ya but your getting there if you know what I mean.
I dont know Joe… He fought arguably the two best p4p fighters in the UFC(Anderson Silva&Q. Jackson). Dan still is good that is why he is fighting the best… What about this gary… Thiago Silva vs. Anderson Silva??? Both BJJ both very good strikers… Thiago actually has some heighth advantage… Could be the calling.. Idk. Just a thought..
first i would like to say everyone says chuck doesn’t make the same mistake twice. he lost to rampage twice so he must. i also think rashad has an excellent chance to win we as mma fans should know that counting someone out so quickly could be bad. i also think if we see it so one sided so does chuck could be bad. two things about jardine 1 if he has a weak chin then chuck has a weak punch but i went back and watched that fight and chuck would punch him and he would laugh. 2 i think he will beat wandi and i also think he had an off night against houston. if you say he didn’t then don’t say chuck did against him.

#78 your exactly right my opinion is that it has been so long since there has been someone with a brawling style, that houston has thrown everyone off. jardine is crazy and exciting to watch. i also will say the reason people don’t like him is that he does not look like a chuck or sylva or a gsp or a rampage or a randy, i like all but the first two. my opinion also is a few more fights dana will probably turn on chuck to. if you can’t win then your on your way out dana is loyal to dana only not fighters or ufc.

This fight could be boring. Will the Iceman get up for this like he did against Wanderlei Silva? Or will we see the Iceman from the Keith Jardine fight? Chuck is a known counterpuncher. He isn’t the type to pressure a fighter. Rashard Evans is a reluctant fighter. He has his moments where he’ll get aggressive but for the most part he’s passive in the octagon, unless his opponent is aggressive.
I got my tickets to this event! Chuck will win. CHuck always beats grapplers like rashad. Look at Tito Ortiz, Kevin Randleman, Jeremy Horn etc. Chuck knocked them all out. GO CHUCK!
I am predicting we see the Wandy of old coming back real soon, and I feel sorry for Jardine to have this fight. I also think Wandy is going to drop a weight class after he successfully dismantles Keith. Sorry, Jardine, you getting knocked out. Silva vs Silva coming soon.
As for Liddell and Evans…. Well, I am a Chuck fan so my opinion is biased. I personally can’t stand watching Evans fight and I have not been impressed by any of his recent performances. If the same Liddell shows up that did against Silva, it’s lights out For Evans.
If the Silva shows up to fight that we watched prior to the Cro Cop and Hendo KO’s then Jardine is in for a bad night. I want to see Silva win but he hasnt fought with the same intensity since then. I wouldnt say he is washed up but he doesnt seem to be as quick as he once was.
I can’t stand Evans and with Chuck being hungry again I think the Rashad train is about to be derailed. Chuck is getting older but he has plenty of fight left in him. He became reliant on knockout power and created big holes in his game. He now seems to have gone back to his roots and is looking at the big picture of scoring points and winning rounds too.
That being said Chuck will never hold the same dominiant position he had at 205. Rampage has his number and I dnt ever see Chuck winning a fight against Jackson. He will continue to do well in the UFC but as long as Jackson holds that belt Chuck wont be the Champ again. I see him fighting atleast another 2 years.
The main events in England continue to suck. The should substitute Japan for England and get Gomi to be the featured guy.
Seems like another watered down main event . Part of the prob is these events run thru on a cycle like westling instead of random like boxing which ties up certain fighters . Its done this way to keep big match-ups regulated . I have watched MMA since the first appearance of Royce …. who would have destroyed Hughes if the old rules were in effect …… and I’d have to say that the fights are starting to suck in the UFC . I have enjoyed what DANA calls the lesser competition’s fights especially Elitexc and strikeforce joint events . The creation of too many orgs doesnt help the talent pool as a whole but if it helps improve the quality of the fights then it works .Sorry to say but I think the ufc will fall in a few years , I wanna see real fights not set ups made by Dana .
I enjoy most of the fights, and I watched that Royce vs Hughes fight time and time again…and… there was no way gracie was goin to win that fight!
I think this Evans Liddell fight is perfect for something that i can’t wait to see. Thiago has to fight somebody right? Well what about Anderson Silva moving up to fight Thiago.

Rashad Evans is a good fighter and he wants this fight to prove something to his self. I respect him for that but MAN is he gonna get stomped. Liddel is as good as liddel wants to be and the only way Evans has a chance is if liddel drops the ball and gets lazy. After reading interviews with evans I know he is gonna fight as hard as his body permits with 110% so chuck should take this seriously. On the other hand I think chuck can take anyone in the 205 division if he wanted it bad enough and that includes the rediculously tough Rampage Jackson.
Rob its time to get out of fairy tale land with Chuck… he is nowhere near as good as he used to be, and We might see a wrestler(Rashad) get himself the biggest TKO of his life… In my opinion, there is only one person up there with tito in takedown defense and that is Chuck… But if you guys remember Tito had a lot of problems with Rashad taking him down.. So it will be a fun match to watch I think..
It’s funny Chuck drops two fights and now he is nowhere as good as he used to be! I guess he just woke up one day and forgot how to fight. Thats crazy man! Every guy has that one fighter that has his number. Chuck’s is Rampage. The loss to Jardine was Chuck trying to be the Knockout king again and he left many holes in his game and did not score enough points to win the majority of rounds. We all know that if that were a back yard fight it would have been clearly given to Chuck for the damage he did to Jardines face. Keith won with his body kicks and exploited that hole in Chucks game. He is not washed up and we will enjoy many of his fights to come. Go Chuck! Rashad is in for a real bad night!
