Keith Jardine To Fight Brandon Vera At UFC 89

24 July 2008 48 Comments

Keith JardineKeith Jardine will look to bounce back from a 36-second TKO loss to Wanderlei Silva when he takes on Brandon Vera in a light heavyweight bout at UFC 89 on October 19th in Birmingham, England. The event is expected to air on Spike TV.

Jardine announced the matchup during a recent appearance on an Albuqueque, New Mexico radio show.

Jardine (13-4-1) was in contention for a light heavyweight title shot following a unanimous decision victory over former UFC light heavyweight Chuck Liddell before being defeated by Silva at UFC 84 in May. A cast member on the second season of “The Ultimate Fighter”, Jardine is 3-3 in his last six bouts.

Vera (9-2), a former heavyweight contender, rebounded from back-to-back losses to Tim Sylvia and Fabricio Werdum with a unanimous decision victory over Reese Andy in his light heavyweight debut at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19th. Despite winning the bout over Andy, Vera failed to impress at the new weight class as the once promising up-and-comer delivered his third-straight underwhelming performance. Prior to the losses, Vera defeated former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir via first-round TKO in late-2006.

With a poor showing like last week. Vera does’t stand a chance!!

  • JOHNBOY said:

i see vera walking threw jardine, big head kick to finish!

  • CK said:

I think Vera will do better this time around cuz it will be his 2nd fight at 205lbs…..He just ran out of energy from cutting weight the first time

  • Henry said:

Vera, no doubt. He was not impressive last time but I think he just has to get used to cutting that much weight. He will kill Jardine.

  • huertarogerhuerta said:

yea vera KOs keith no chin jardine and if he cant do that then expect another underwhelmin bout from vera and for jardine to capitalize on someones poor preformance again

  • Bo said:

Jardine is so choppy. He is jumping around bobbing his head. Weird style. I just think would need to finish early. He neds to hover around 205-210 from now till Oct. to even last 2 full rounds!!

  • kelvin said:

vera sucks and i hope to never see him again after jardine stomps him! let him go to affliction and have another boring fight with the washed up maine-iac!

  • The Gunslinger said:

vera will not be able to adapt to keith wierd style of holding his hands….just like forrest and chuck….and dont say he has no chin he took plenty of shots from liddell for three rounds and still whooped him…and he even dropped liddell a couple times…..just because wanderlai ko’d him doesnt mean he has no chin…and also he did finish forrest something rampage couldnt do!

  • Justin said:

Jardine was a cast member of Season 2. Just thought you should know.

  • Dietrich said:

One fight its okay to have excuses 3 fights look like the makings of a slump. I know he broke his hand and I know it was a fast stoppage and I know it was his first fight at 205 but Vera needs to be stellar against Jardine or he will likey go to Dana’s toss pile very soon. Jardine really doesn’t have too many questions around him Silva on a three loss streak…in the back of your mind you had to figure on him doing something great or dying in the effort.

  • huertarogerhuerta said:

o so houston alexander didnt ko him and leave him in a hump like wandy did? all but 1 of his loses is by KO or TKO so to question his chin isnt as ridiculous as u make it sound and as for the liddel and forrest fight wat can i say except wat i already said he is very good at takin advantage of other peoples poor preformances anyone that comes to fight jardine wit his head screwed on right is gonna murder him

  • animal said:

No disrespect to Chuck but I think that Keith showed him that sometimes he needs to throw more leg kicks and jabs so that he can set up his over-hand right.

Accept what Rogan always says though, suppose Chuck had so much success with that style why should he change?

    Sorry to digress!
Would hope that the dean of mean would destroy the truth. Got a feeling that Vera may under-estimate Keith a bit (due to over-confidence!) and see Jardine taking advantage. More leg kicks and punches from odd angles winning a decision (hopefully!).

  • B Free said:

If the fight lasts longer than a minute or two i give it to Jardine since he tends to get a little sloppy during the first round with the exception of the Forest fight. The Truth could be deadly if finally fights to his expectations but i got Jardine with a round two TKO. And come on, The Dean of Mean is a much better nickname than the Truth

  • rhymeskill15 said:

vera will be put to sleep!
jardine is a good fighter…but has a tendency to get knocked out..
but he is the more aggressive and experienced fighter…
    he will knock vera out!

  • Dietrich said:

Live by the sword die by the sword…
Jardine likes to throw…the problem is always getting caught. Jardine’s 3 Ko losses were
    wrong place wrong time things.

1Alexander’s debut no one knew what Alexander would do. Its kind of like the NFL the new all star might make a few short term plays but in the long run production goes down as defenses key on him. Alexander has 2 great wins and two great losses.
2 Wuiff in 6 seconds. You are talking about a time with 2 relative newcomers with 8 fights between them…freak things happen.
3 Wanderlei was like betting on a top 10 UNC team to lose their 4th in a row.Not very likely
Jardine isn’t all that he’s just more there as of today than Vera.

  • Dannyboy said:

    Well said Dietrich.

Jardine in R1 or R2 TKO.

  • joel b said:

vera better get comfortable at 205 and not gas against jardine

  • brandon said:

I think everyone at 205 now knows how to beat Jardine, and it is to punch often and get inside. You may need to have a good chin to accomplish this because your going to get hit, but Wand and Houston both dominated Jardine when they took it to him. Even in his fight with Chuck he took the most damage when Chuck was on the offense. He gave the most damage to Chuck when he was trying to play his counter striking (which he often does for the whole fight).

Anyhow I see Vera winning ONLY if he brings the fight to Jardine.

  • WM said:

I don’t believe Vera trains seriously. He looked flabby and weak against Sylvia and Werdum and he looked about the same against Reese Andy except skinnier.

  • huertarogerhuerta said:

i just saw a commercial on spike that said dana has a big announcement this sat during the replay of ufc 84 any idea on wat it is?

  • ufcmanz said:

As far as a Free UFC goes 89 is starting to look pretty good; Jardine Vs. Vera / Machida Vs. T Silva / Leben Vs. Bisping not bad fights nothing special on this card just good fights

  • dirtydan said:

good solid card for free but honestly i cant stand vera or jardine but vera just bothers me i hope he gets his ass kicked

  • natedogg77 said:

    Mean Sardine will be victorious!

  • jpm said:

As i’ve said before, this is turning into a sweet little card. I just pray everybody stays fit and healthy between now and October.

  • Bo said:

    huertarogerhuerta,

The big announcement is mmafrenzy.com is buying the UFC and Dana and Lorenzo are going to be there custodians for the office!! lol. that announcement was made a long time ago.

  • huertarogerhuerta said:

i did wonder y last saturday dana was wearin a jumpsuit instead of his usual suit lol but i figured it was either 89 was gonna b free or the ufc was gonna buy the ifl but the custodial thing makes so much more since

i’ve never had to cut weight and fight in a cage befofe so granted, i might be outa line, but it seems to me that vera just used the weight cutting as an excuse for a poor fight. even if it’s the first time he’s really had to cut, how much heavier is he normally than 205? seems like he could take a crap and be at 203 so i can’t help but attribute his last performance to anything other than a lack of desire. also, was he training with people that never cut weight? you’d think that he’d have someone that could help him do it smart so it didn’t affect his performance. sucks cuz i really like the guy but i don’t think he has the drive to get back on track and be a champ. jardine’s just about at a title shot so i see him bein a lot more focused and hungry in this fight. jardine by decision cuz he won’t submit him and vera’s too smart to get ko’d.

  • Sniper said:

I think anybody’s first time cutting weight is harder on them. Franklin had a tough time for his first fight at 185 too, so did Bisbing. But every time after that they were good to go. I think Vera absolutely has the desire, watch any of his previous fights (except maybe against Silvia). It’ll be a tough fight for either one, especially with Jardine coming off such an embarrassing loss.

By the way, mmafrenzy, Jardine won a split decision over Chuck, not unanimous.

  • YZFOXRACING said:

BY THE WAY SNIPER, BISPING LOOKED AWESOME HIS FIRST FIGHT AN MW. HE DIDN’T GAS SO YOU CAN’T USE HIM AS AN EXAMPLE.

    2girls2cups
IM WITH YOU ON THAT ONE…YOUR ABSOLUTLEY RIGHT

  • YZFOXRACING said:

HOW WAS THAT AN EMBARRESING LOSE DUDE. HE GOT CAUGHT. EVERYONE GETS CAUGHT THERE WAS NOTHING EMBARRESING ABOUT THAT

  • 2girls2cups said:

agreed, if i got my ass kicked by wandy or houston alexander, i don’t think i’d be too embarrassed. i’d prolly be pretty impressed that i’m still alive. an embarrasing loss would mean joey from TUF kicked your ass, or noah, or kalib starnes. that would be hard to show your face after.

  • YZFOXRACING said:

EVERYTHING SNIPER JUST SIAD WAS FUKKING STUPID… SOUNDS LIKE HE JUST STARTED WATCHING MMA… BUT I GUESS WEVE ALL DONE STUPID COMMENTS.. ITS OK SNIPER… LOL HA HA HA AH AH

  • Sniper said:

Bisbing even said after the fight that it took more out of him than he expected. Either way, I think this next cut for Vera will show more about how he’ll be at 205. Then again, I could be wrong, he could just be having a hard time dealing with his two losses.
And while Wandy (NOT Alexander) is a great opponent, I would be embarrassed but any 36 second loss, especially one as brutal as that. Yes, anyone can get caught, I’m not taking anything away from him as a fighter or his training, but would you feel good about that performance and feel over confident coming into your next fight? That’s all I’m saying.

  • YZFOXRACING said:

ITS ALRIGHT SNIPER I ACCEPT YOUR APOLIGIES

  • Sniper said:

YZ, I didn’t apologize. It’s real easy to say some else’s comments are “fukking stupid” when you haven’t posted an opinion yet on this topic. Just because I don’t say that someone is a piece of shit because they gassed, when they’ve never gassed before, and it’s there first time cutting weight, I think shows my experience in watching MMA. That’s the problem with MMA fans is that they get too fixated on who they want to win and they don’t look at things objectively. The only reason there was a controversy over the Griffin/Jackson fight was because people want their bet to win, and when it’s close or when a ref stops it too soon, they feel robbed. Not to mention people just want drama by saying that Dana just wants Chuck to be champ again. If that was the case, I’m pretty sure Chuck wouldn’t have dropped that fight to Jardine. Not everything needs to be a conspiracy theory.

  • YZFOXRACING said:

OKAY YOU WANT MY OPINION. JARDINE WILL WALK AWAY WITH THIS ONE. VERA HAS NEVER EMBRESSED ME. MMA FAN ARE FIXATED? DUDE THATS WHAT YOUR RUNNIN YOUR MOUTH ABOUT. BECAUSE JARDINE GOT EMBARRESED AND KNOCKED OUT. THATS WHY YOU THINK VERA WILL WIN. DUDE COME ON AND LISTEN TO WHAT YOUR SAYING. YOUR PRETTY MUCH DISSIN YOUR SELF “MMA FAN”

  • 2girls2cups said:

gettin heated in here, and it’s not even about bisping and how much greater the US is than the UK, hahah.

  • Sniper said:

Uh, I’m pretty sure I didn’t say Vera will win. I said it will be a tough fight for either one. And if Vera has never “embressed” you, you need to watch his fight with Justin Eilers, or pretty much any fight before his fight with Tim Silvia. So before you start your whole “MMA FAN” talk, watch a fight that’s took place before a week ago.

  • Sniper said:

2gilrs2cups, lol. Who you got in the Bisbing/Leben fight?

  • YZFOXRACING said:

WHATEVA MAN. IM NOT GONNA GO THERE…. I’LL DROP.. HAVE A GOOD DAY…

  • Sniper said:

Tapping out, uh? Oh, by the way FNG, that’s when you submit, concede a loss, admit you got your ass kicked. lol. You have a good one too.

  • 2girls2cups said:

    sniper,

hard call cuz as much as i hate to say it, bisping is technically much better. but i always have a habit of thinking that leben is gonna get smashed but then he pulls of a big ko, so i’m honestly down the middle on this one. i’d love to see leben win of course. i think he’s come along way as a fighter and as a person so i’d be happy for his success. regardless i hope it’s a good fight cuz bispings last two have been joke opponents so we’ll see what he’s made of in this one.

  • YZFOXRACING said:

    THANKS I’LL HAVE A GOOD ONE….

  • Sniper said:

I completely agree. Although, while he has come a long way, I don’t see Leben ever being champ, so when he beats someone like Bisbing (who has the UFC all over his nuts) he’s knocking them farther down the ladder. If Bisbing doesn’t get caught, I see him winning by decision, probably a bloody one at that, on both sides.

  • 2girls2cups said:

totally true. no way leben ever wears a belt so i know what the UFC is pulling for. personally i’d like to see it and i think it would be nice to throw a little curve ball in the MW division. a loss to leben might force the UFC to put bisping up against a couple more challenges before handing him a title shot on a silver platter which they so obviously want to do.

  • ufcmanz said:

Jardine is a up and down fighter / Good win fallowed by a big KO loss , Jardine should win if Vera comes in fighting the same way he did with Reese, Vera really needs cut his weight right and recover for the fight, and come to fight to win.

  • Dietrich said:

    Dannyboy,
    Thank you…

  • bkl said:

VERA will KO jardine in a minute or less… highlight reel KO for sure to…. But still no KO ever gonna top that RAPE CHOKE jardine took from WANDY SILVA… hahahahaha poor jardine….
